Dr.xx requested a letter of reference from me to support his application for the postdoctoral position in your laboratory. As his former advisor, I think highly of Dr.xx, therefore I am very delighted to comply with his request.
I knew him in the summer of xx, when he joined my research group on function of Chinese electro-acupuncture in hypocholesterolemia as the only undergraduate research assistant. In this group, he was responsible for the aspects of assisting to construct the animal model and gathering data. Though that work was ordinary, he performed every task carefully, and presented his ideas to help improve the experimental results. Many times I saw that he still worked at about 11p.m. when I left. After finishing his courses in 2009, he went on the research project to isolate hypercholesterolemia-associated genes. While managing the project, he showed me with his excellent experiment ability and independent thinking aptitude. What impressed me most was his persistence and optimism. In the presence of pressure, he was rather enjoying the process of the research instead of being uncomfortable with fear and avoidance.

国外博士后申请经验(zz)
有些博士后申请是实力与机遇的结合。实力当然是第一位的，通常
由你的publications, awards等体现。机遇是指要能遇见对你有意
的老板以及适合你的位置。仅有实力是不够的，必须还要善于主动
出击，去发掘和创造机遇。以下我结合自己的博士后申请经历，
谈谈我的一些经验和体会。
一. 申请前的准备
申请前的准备包括两方面，实力的准备和申请材料的准备。众所周知，
实力是最主要的决定性因素，所以对实力的准备越久，越充分，将来
获得成功的可能性就越大。4-5分流的学生从本科就可以开始啦。关于
怎样准备实力，我想大家都心知肚明，就用不着我来婆婆妈妈教育大家乐。
有一点想提醒大家，除第一作者的论文外，也要尽量争取一些co-auther
的论文。因为我的publication list里的论文全是第一作者，所以曾
有国外老板好意提醒我可以加上非第一作者的publication。可惜我没有，
由于老板的原因，我们组里同一方向的研究生的paper彼此之间互不署名，
现在很后悔啊！:( 所以大家要吸取教训，一定要对老板动之以情，晓之
以理，争取(同一方向，课题）研究生之间论文相互署名。特别是对于
那些高影响因子的期刊，象nature,science,即使你的排名在十几位
也会把对方唬一跳的。:)
申请材料的准备其实很简单，一份resume/CV和3-4封推荐信。推荐信
非常重要，如果你的推荐人很牛的话，你将会获得很大优势。当然，有
一个推荐人得是你现在的老板，主要表扬你在科研中的出色表现和高超
的智力等等。Resume的范例可在BBS上轻易找到，主要是experience要写
得详细一些，另外publication中除了把所有co-author的papers全写上，
也可以把submitted, in preparation以及国内发表的文章加入，虽然
可能作用不大，但一个很长的publication list总是引人注意，并且表明
你科研工作的活跃和积极性。
二. 申请的时机
博士后申请的时间通常是在毕业前的倒数第二个学期，但具体时机还需要
结合个人的情况仔细斟酌，并不是越早越好。根据我的经验，申请时间
太早主要有两方面弊端，一是实力尚在增长中，早期的publication当然
没有后期的那么诱人。以我为例，2000年10月初开始申请时是4篇paper，
到12月中是7篇，到2001年3月是10篇。二是申请时间太早，
Lawrence Laboratory的准offer，问我2001年3月能否开始工作，我只好
faint. 个人觉得，如果是在7月毕业，可以在前一年12月左右开始正式
申请。当然，申请材料的准备以及相关信息的查找可以提前做好。
三. 申请信息的来源
博士后申请的信息可以来自三方面：
1.博士后招聘网站。物理类的如)搜索.用诸如你的专业的关键字,以及
博士后呀什么的在网络上搜索看看.
(4)直接和你认识的老板或你所在领域有名气的老板联系.很多老板有基金
但并没有决定是否找博士后干活,很有可能看了你的材料决定招收你. 事实
上,我拿到的OFFER打部分是这样找来的,当然也可能是因为通过正式渠道申
请的现在还在冗长的官僚审察过程当中(这也说明了直接和老板联系是最快
捷的方式,而且没有期限限制,可以随时联系,随时走人--要告诉你现在的老
板哦). 不要害怕和大老板联系,这至少也是向本专业牛人介绍自己工作的
一个机会, 即使没有找到工作,也没有白费力气. 不过最好先搞清楚对方是
老板还是学生(有些学生也很牛的),免得人家回信说
"You are excellent, and I would be very glad to offer you a position,
if I can get my PhD degree and become a professor in a few months."
然后是申请前最好浏览一下这个老板的主页(当然可能之前你已经很了解他的工 作了). (老板的主页也可以用GOOGLE搜索.)
(5) 国外大公司也有一些相当于博士后但是名字可能是JUNIOR RESEARCHER 之 类的职位也不错,例如Bell, NEC, Hitachi等等.
(6)你的熟人介绍,例如现在老板的关系户.
3. EMAIL 还是 寄信?
最好是寄EMAIL如果对方没有特别要求寄一般信件.最好将你的简历做成PDF文件 作为附件发送.(PDF 是ACROBAT PortableDocumentFormat的缩写,做出来的文件 比WORD要好看,文件要小得多,而且不会带病毒,兼容性好-UNIX下也可以看,国外
老板可能会反感WORD因为病毒的问题以及他可能不用WINDOWS, PDF格式转化文件 可以用ACROBAT DISTILLER, ACROBAT 5.0的包里就有,网上也有SHAREWARE),另 外HTML也是不错的选择.有的老板和机构可能还会要求是PLAIN TEXT的ASCII码 文件,或者在网上递交申请.
4. 第一次联系老板说些什么?
用EMAIL(永远)
(0) 告诉对方你在找博士后职位(一个句子)
(1) 简单介绍你的主要工作兴趣和经验(最好只有一个句子)
(2) 拍他一句不太肉麻的马屁(其实没有必要)
(3) 告诉对方附件的文件格式(例如PDF)并表示有问题你可以寄打印件或
其他格式
(4) 你的联系方式
(5) 一定在附件里寄上你的简历,关键的东西要在里面反映,所以要精心
准备简历.

5. 简历里要有什么?
(1)你的最基本的情况(地址,出生等PERSONAL DATA, 婚姻状况要写--与你的收入有直接关系, 不要写你的政治面貌和宗教信仰)
(2)受教育的情况历史(硕士博士老板的名字要写上Advised by Prof. Antitaidu
之类)
(3)工作经历(里面每一项用一句话概括工作的主要内容, 硕士博士的研究工作
也算,这里你也有机会非常简单地介绍一下自己硕士博士期间的研究内容)
(4)奖励,荣誉称号,学术职位等等,反正对你有利的都写上,重要放前面,也可 以按时间的逆序排列.
(5)你的博士论文的摘要(写好点啦)
(6) 你主要工作的简单介绍
(7) PUBLICATION LIST (写上文章的标题,如果觉得必要也可以写上代表作的 简明摘要,越短越好,没有发表在审稿的也写上,如果有加上可以找到他们的 网址,例如预印本库的网址)
(8) 简明的RESEARCH INTEREST(列出几项, 例如
1, how to antitaidu?
2. quantum taidu and computer taidu, etc.)
(9) 如果你愿意,写上2-5个愿意给你写推荐信的教授的地址, 如果有国外的最好了, 但是事先要和他们联系好,因为老板可能会直接给他们打电话或发EMAIL询问你 的情况.
(10)精心准备的 Statement of Research Interest 或 Research Plan.最好
在2000字以内,内容要具体,少来没有边际的吹牛,不要象本科生的STATEMENT那 样从你放牛生涯开始聊起你的理想什么的.
总之,你的简历应该高度专业化,显得你是一个认真,考虑问题全面,成熟的专家, 不要too naive.有些机构还会特别要求你解释你的计划或研究兴趣与他们的关系, 所以事先联系老板是非常非常必要的,无论是什么地方.然后按要求单独写一个就是, 应该不难,同样,不要太龟毛.
6. 推荐信
(1)如果有老板愿意自己写是最好的,我的推荐信三个老
板是自己写的(一个是老外),也有一个是我写他签名的,但是我尽量
不寄这个老板的.最好是老板自己用EMAIL寄PLAIN TEXT(不要附件)
的推荐信,其次是老板自己用邮票寄(你付钱好啦),再次是自己邮寄(信封最好 有封好后老板的签字--密封签名).不要伪造推荐信,宁愿不要推荐也好过这样 做---做博士后不比做学生,这样一来不好,二来可能断送你所有的美好前程.如 果是你草拟推荐信,第一英文要好,没有信心找别人看看,第二要专业化,介绍你 的工作,不要想本科生的推荐信.
(2) 几个推荐人? 一般是三个,偶尔两个或四五个,也可能不要推荐人(通常 这样的情况发生在你自己直接和老板联系工作的情况).
(3)什么时候寄?或什么时候要求老板寄? 一般说来,对方没有要求你寄推荐信 的时候不要寄, 但要事先准备好或和推荐人说好.
7. 代表作
如果对方要求,你可以寄去你的代表作和博士论文(如果是英文的或对方能读中文), 用EMAIL通常也可以.
8.申请多少个地方?
越多越好,反正EMAIL不花钱(在单位上网)或花钱不多(在家电话上网)
9. 注意事项
